Former Tottenham, Napoli and Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente has spoken on the potential of Hugo Ekitike.

This month revealed the shocking news that Ekitike will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 term and this summer's World Cup after rupturing his Achilles tendon during the 2-0 second-leg defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Ekitike broke his silence on social media after his club confirmed he would miss the World Cup. He posted: "It's hard, maybe even unfair.

"But I'm grateful this is happening to me here, among you. I'm not alone. Your strength and your love will be my driving force. See you again soon, Anfield."

The 23-year-old has been Liverpool’s key goalscorer this season and many believe he will prove to be vital to the future of the side as they aim to lift the title once more next season.

Ekitike over Torres?

Speaking to Hajper, Llorente believes that the Frenchman could surpass club legend Fernando Torres as long as he continues to evolve.

“Fernando Torres had an incredible career and Ekitike is still a young player with very few years at the top level.

“He has a lot of talent and can become a very high-level player, but I think it’s still too soon to compare him to someone who achieved so much.

“If he keeps growing, why not? He has many years ahead and it will depend on his hunger, consistency and work.”

Liverpool beat Everton at the weekend without the help of Ekitike as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk got on the scoresheet. Alexander Isak was disappointing however, in what is a worry as he replaces Ekitike for the end of the season.
