Belgium winger Jérémy Doku could miss matches later in the World Cup because of the impending birth of his first child, a move that has been called disgusting.

Doku could not find a way past Egypt’s defense in Belgium’s opening game as the side drew 1-1 thanks to a goal from Mohamed Hany own goal in the second half.

The winger has represented Belgium since 2020, making 42 appearances so far as he continues to lead the line for his nation who have been underwhelming at the World Cup so far.

Now, as Belgium are set to face New Zealand and Iran, he could miss both group games to attend the birth of his child.

"No one wants to miss a birth," Doku told reporters. "Moreover, it is my first child. But I also know that there is a lot involved in football. In any case, the FA sympathizes with the players and our situations, so we will see what we can do."

However, journalist France Pierro ripped into Doku on the L'Equipe channel as he scratched his head at why he would make such a decision.

"You can't miss a World Cup... And now, you're not going to the match to cut an umbilical cord?".

"You have the chance to participate in a World Cup, and there are hundreds of footballers who would kill to be in your place, but you're going to leave all that to go and witness the birth of your child, which is a disgusting moment, excuse me, where the father is useless, he has a role as an extra."

Former boxer Brahim Asloum replied: "A baby is your whole life. You can win a World Cup or miss it, but once it's over, it's over."

The outlet had to apologise for the comments but have not learnt their lesson as they made similar comments about Brazil defender Marquinhos who also attended the birth of his child as he missed a fixture against Montpellier in 2019.
