Jacob Murphy gave Newcastle the lead after four minutes before Lucas Paqueta’s side restored parity half an hour later.

Sven Botman’s own goal gave West Ham the lead going into half time, with Tomas Soucek securing the win in the 97th minute.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Bowen couldn’t help but admit his relief at finally getting a win in front of the home fans.

"It’s obviously been a difficult period,” he said.

“But when I’ve spoke to the lads, (I’ve said) we’re the only ones who change it. When mine (my shot) hit the post... sometimes you think ‘Is our luck going to change?’ But we stuck at it and we went on to get a comfortable win."

"Yes, it’s been frustrating," Bowen continued. "But we have so much potential in this squad, and I’ve told the team, it’s up to us to go out and show it."
