Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has spoken to the media as he prepares to take on Brighton this weekend.

Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal last weekend marked their fifth loss in a row in all tournaments as Howe struggles to turn the club’s poor form around.

Across their last 20 games in all competitions, Newcastle have won just 6 games and have conceded an average of 2.1 goals per game as supporters worry they might fall towards the relegation zone.

Will Howe stay for next season?

Howe first opened up on whether he is confident that he will be Newcastle manager next season as reports suggest the board could let him go as the club edges towards no European football for next season.

"I have to retain that confidence. I don’t think it serves anybody to not have that long-term vision.

"So, it’s interesting how you do the job, because you pretty much look at it day to day, how can we prepare for Brighton with one eye on next week, and one eye on the summer, and then one eye on next season?

"That’s always how I have managed. You look after long-term interests whilst taking care of the very short-term aims that you need, and that will never change.

"Regardless of results, you have to have that for the benefit of the football club. You always have to think of the football club first. We need to win games."

Does Howe feel supported?

These questions come after Howe the annual meeting of Newcastle United’s owners, executives and department heads at Matfen Hall. The Newcastle boss says he feels backed by the board and secure in his position at the current time.

“Yeah. No change in terms of the support and infrastructure. I was pleased by the level of support given to me, but of course, I still understand how football works and knowing that we need to get results, that will never change.

"I have never needed clarity in my head in the sense that I am here, I’m working and I’m committed, and that won’t change.

"Obviously, the football club has to do what the football club has to do. It has to see that we are going in the right direction and there is a positive feeling, a team that is fighting on all fronts to get results.

"I felt against Arsenal a really positive uptake in performance and want to see that continue in our next game."

Team news

Lastly, questions turned to team news ahead of the Brighton clash as Newcastle aim to climb up from their dire position in 14th. Howe revealed crucial updates on Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

“Nick is training well. I think he is benefiting from the bigger sessions with 20 players that we have missed throughout the season, and now we are beginning to work on the things we felt we needed to earlier on in the season but didn’t have the opportunity to.

“His pass to Yoane was sublime against Arsenal, and it was great to see those two link together. They could make a potential partnership for us.”
