Ahead of the game, Henderson became the first player in history to have featured for the Three Lions at seven major tournaments, and the first to play at four World Cups as he came off the bench against Panama.

Speaking on breaking the record, the Brentford midfielder revealed how happy he is to be placed in the record books.

"I'm just delighted to be a part of this team, and it's still as special now as it was when I made my debut in 2010," he said.

"Time goes quickly, but I'm just delighted that I can help the teams as much as possible, both on and off the field, and just try and give everything I can to help us achieve our dreams, really.”

When asked about facing the DR Congo, Henderson admitted that England will not find it easy.

"I see in the first game they got a good result against Portugal, I think it was Wissa scored. We know him well, good team, some good players. Very, very strong," Henderson said.

"In the knockout rounds (there are) no easy games."

Henderson also became the first Englishman to play in seven major international tournaments and at 36 years old he will be looking to provide the necessary experience against the DR Congo tomorrow night.
