Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has spoken to the media as he prepares to go up against Huddersfield Town in the EFL Cup.

Huddersfield have beaten Leicester City and Sunderland to progress to this stage and will hope to continue their giant killing streak against City this week.  City are the clear favourites heading into Wednesday's clash however, and Guardiola first stated that striker Erling Haaland likely won’t start as he prepares for the weekend.

Haaland likely won't start

"It was recovery yesterday, we didn't train, today I didn't see him or the rest of the players yet, but hopefully he can be (fit) for the next weekend.

"It's been a demanding week and the last game especially, and sometimes the players have problems, but I think will be fine for next weekend."

Donnarumma's Yashin Trophy triumph

Guardiola next opened up on Gianluigi Donnarumma winning the Yashin Trophy and being well-placed in the overall the Ballon d'Or Awards after his performances for Paris Saint-Germain last season in what was a proud moment for the Italian international.

"I congratulate him, but of course PSG as well for what he has done in Paris. But yes, the impact has been really great.

"Always I say the same, you finish ninth or sixth or 12th, the fact you are there means you are doing a good season. I have the feeling every season he is there, he's close, because of the good keeper that he is to the individual awards."

Guardiola gives credit to Arsenal after weekend clash

The Spanish head coach also commented on the reaction to his side playing five at the back and having less possession than Arsenal in their 1-1 draw at the weekend which confused many City fans.

"We recovered many things that last season we were missing. We have an incredible spirit. Of course we cannot maintain all this season playing the way we played. We don't want it.

"But I give credit to an incredible and powerful opponent. Most the games they are able to do that to their opponent. I want to learn to celebrate the way we draw a game away at Arsenal, who were in the semi-final of the Champions League last season and a contender over many seasons. I want to celebrate that point."

City will rotate due to injuries

Questions then turned to his team selection and joked that his side will not be the same as it was against Arsenal even if he does respect the competition.

"I am going to give you some breaking news. Tomorrow we will not play the same starting XI as we did in the last few games, that's for sure.

"The only problem we have in the Carabao Cup right now - I said many times that I respect this competition or we would not have won it four times in a row - but it is to arrive in this competition with no injuries. We have injuries, so it will be a mix from the first team to academy players for tomorrow, because the priority has to be Monaco and Brentford.

"It is what it is, but we will try to compete to go through."

Phillips set to become a father for the second time

Finally, he was asked about the availability and future of midfielder Kalvin Phillips who was handed the No.44 shirt this week after his number was taken by summer signing Tijjani Reijnders.

"Today he is in London because he is going to become a father for a second time. That is the future for Kalvin right now.

"He is coming back training with us so then we will see what happens. Of course, he is coming from a surgery so now has to make training sessions and training sessions, then maybe he will get some minutes in some games."
