Ex-Arsenal captain William Gallas believes Mikel Arteta is under a lot of pressure to win a trophy with Arsenal this season.

The Gunners have in invested in their squad with £190M worth of signings as they look to win the Premier League for the first time in 21 years. Arteta's only major trophy in charge of the club came back in 2020 as they lifted the FA Cup and many believe this is not good enough for a side packed full of world-class stars.

Arteta will be feeling the pressure

The former Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham defender Gallas spoke to Gambling Zone about the Spaniard and how he must lead the North London side to glory this season or face the consequences that many have felt have been coming for some time.

"If you asked the Arsenal fans to choose winning the Premier League and the Champions League, I think they would choose the Premier League.

"That's why Arteta is going to have a lot of pressure on his shoulders, and as you said, he can't hide from anything. If he doesn’t win either trophy, he’s the one to blame. We have been waiting to see if he’s a manager who can win - now’s the time."

It will not be a shock to Arteta that fans are expecting trophies at Emirates Stadium this season, especially after such a cash injection which has includes added the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke. Gallas spoke more on his expectations for the season ahead in what he thinks will be a tough campaign.

Gallas' expectations

"To be honest, the last two years my expectations were to see Arsenal win the Premier League because for me, other clubs were underperforming and they had the chance.

"And what I expect from them as well is to have more personality, more character on the pitch. I really want to see players fighting in a positive way. Because we know the season is going to be long. We know sometimes there will be trouble against some teams and sometimes you have to show your character.

"Not just some of the players, but all of them. We know at the back they have Gabriel who can do that, and we know Declan Rice can be that guy too, but more need to step up. I want to see others who take responsibility and shout at their team-mates if they’re not doing enough."

The Arsenal boss has had his fair share of critics and this season he has the chance to silence them for good as he chases down a trophy that could cement him as a legendary manager at the club.
