United announced an agreement for the £62.5M signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha earlier this summer before revealed that they had completed the £71M signing of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford in what is a whole new attack for the Red Devils.
However, despite the investment, United are coming off the back of their worst ever domestic season which saw them finish in 15th spot and much closer to the relegation zone than any European place which was the club’s original target under manager Ruben Amorim.
Now, despite an impressive pre-season tour of America saw United beat West Ham and thrash Bournemouth, before drawing to Everton, Ferdinand is worried for United who will face the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and neighbours Manchester City in their opening games.
"He (Amorim) will know these players better in the last two or three weeks than he has, I think, for the rest of the whole of last season.
"He will know people in a much more personable way, in that he can attack and approach people in a way because he's seen and worked with them closely and knows them better as human beings.
"And I'm interested to see how that then pans out in the season.
"The problem you've got, if you look at the fixture list, Man United's fixture list is horrendous. the first six games. It's tough.
"So all this good work that we're seeing and we're hearing about and coming out of the club and what I saw, could be undone within the first six games if it doesn't go well.”
With no European football this season, there is pressure on Amorim to bring domestic success as the squad will be less fatigued due to less minutes on the pitch. However, with just a few to go before the start of the season many fans feel like new signings are still needed and Ferdinand may be right to worry about United who still look behind their rivals on paper.
