Liverpool had a turbulent season to say the least as the side went from title winners to a club desperately scrambling for a Champions League place at the end of the season.
The Reds went trophyless, picked up 12 Premier League defeats, conceded 53 goals in the league alone and even had star player Mohamed Salah turn on Slot twice in what was a campaign many will wish could be erased from history.
Now, after sacking Slot, the club have brought in former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola who led the side into Europe for the first time in their history with an impressive sixth-placed finish.
Murphy spoke exclusively to Tribal Football via NetBet online football betting about how he believes the board made the right decision in letting Slot go as fan frustration grew to new heights.
Was letting Slot go the right call?
Are you relieved that Slot has gone? Do you think sacking him was the right decision?
"I think it was the correct decision. I felt sorry for Arne Slot, because he did a lot of things for the club and not everything that went wrong was his fault. He did make mistakes, but not everything was his fault.
"The reason I believe it was the right decision was because, at the start of next season, there would have been a fear among the fans as to what would happen regarding results and his style of play. Now that the club have sacked him, there’s a new energy and excitement, which was really needed.
"The pressure that would have been on Slot in the first few games would have been so large that if it didn’t go well, the decision to keep him would have set the club backwards. They then would have potentially sacked him and then be in a position of finding someone else after the season had started.
"Making the decision now was the right thing to do, because it gives the club a bit of a lift going into the new season. The fans will believe that the team will play in the way everyone wants them to."
Can Iraola realistically challenge for the Premier League title in his first season, or is this more of a long-term project?
"I think it would be unlikely for Iraola to properly challenge for the title in his first season. Liverpool still have a wonderful squad, but Iraola will need to integrate new players and a new style, and integrating new players last season was a big problem for Liverpool.
"I think a realistic aim would be for the club to win some silverware and being consistently in the top four, which is probably what Iraola will want too. You don’t want a situation where you’re 10 points off Champions League places halfway through the season – you want to be competitive."
Liverpool need to spend big this summer
Iraola joins just as Andrew Robertson, Ibrahima Konate and Mohamed Salah head out the door this summer. All 3 players have won it all with Liverpool and the Spaniard has his work cut out in replacing the trio whilst the likes of Alisson Becker, Federico Chiesa and Curtis Jones are also linked with moves away.
Murphy believes that losing so many key players won't be an issue as long as the club find the replacements in the coming months before the new campaign kicks off.
How big of a loss are Salah, Konate and Robertson? Could those 3 leaving hurt Iraola’s chances of success?
"It really depends on what Liverpool do in the summer. When you lose senior players who you’ve had success and won things with, then of course you’re missing something in the dressing room and on the pitch.
"The key for Liverpool will be bringing in the right personnel to cover that, and also finding out who the new leaders to emerge will be. For example, I look at Dominik Szoboszlai’s performances this season and the responsibility he’s taken upon his shoulders. It’s like when Steven Gerrard left the club and Jordan Henderson came through and started showing his leadership qualities.
"Players leaving give other players at the club the opportunity to grow, but ultimately, the loss of Salah, Robertson and Konate will be magnified – or not – by the players the club bring in during the transfer window."
Are you aware of Yan Diomande and do you think he will be able to replace Salah this summer?
"He could potentially be a very good replacement to Mohamed Salah – he’s very dynamic, can go both ways, can score goals and very fit. He looks an excellent talent from what I’ve seen of him, so he could potentially be a good replacement.
"I wouldn’t say he’s the perfect replacement though, because you ideally want someone who’s played at the top level before and wouldn’t be fazed by big games, so they can come in and hit the ground running.
"If I was in charge of Liverpool, I would be trying to break the bank for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia; he can play on the right as comfortably as he can on the left and he’s probably the best winger in the world at the moment.
"When a player has been at PSG for a while and won the Champions League twice, maybe the challenge of playing in the Premier League could be exciting. It’s probably unlikely, but if he was to walk through the door, there’d be zero risks attached to him, whereas young players like Diomande could take time."
