Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has backed Rodri after his disappointing performance against Cape Verde.

Cape Verde pulled off one of the biggest shocks in recent World Cup memory as the small island nation secured a 0-0 draw against one of the favourites Spain in their opening clash.

Former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit slammed Rodri after the game after the Manchester City star ripped into Cape Verde’s tactics. Petit claimed he was being “arrogant” and should “look at himself in the mirror” after what was a poor performance.

Critics also claimed that his presence slows the team's transitions and he cannot command the midfield that looked subpar against an opposition that held their own on the night.

However, despite the media ripping Rodri apart, De la Fuente was keen to back the 29 year old who he believes has every right to lead in the middle of the park.

"Good heavens, please. For you to say things like this. Some people can say one thing or another, but in any case, I find it highly insulting to say that about the best player in the world," De la Fuente said.

"Rodrigo is the best player in the world, and even at 50% he's much better than most midfielders in the world. Even at 50%. And with us, he's a player of exceptional importance, with fantastic clarity and vision, balance. Rodrigo is a guiding light for us."

Rodri is into the final 12 months of his current Man City deal and his future could be on his mind at the World Cup where Spain look far from favourites after the opening game.

De la Fuente’s side next face Saudi Arabia this Sunday, a side who drew with Uruguay in their opening clash.
