Former Newcastle and Spurs winger Chris Waddle has suggested Liverpool replace captain Virgil van Dijk this summer.

The towering defender was on target for Oranje in their group opener against Japan on Sunday and he proved his worth for the national side once more with an impressive header.

The club captain has been an instrumental player for the Reds since joining back in 2018 from Southampton and has won every trophy possible with the side who are said to be worried about his age as he prepares to turn 35 years old.

Liverpool and Barcelona are now knocking on the door for Tottenham defender Van de Ven, according to reports as despite the club’s dire campaign, the Dutchman stood out at the back.

Speaking to Andy's Bet Club, Waddle revealed that Van Dijk’s compatriot could be the perfect replacement ahead of the new campaign.

"Well, Virgil van Dijk is getting on a bit, isn't he? And they'll be looking for a replacement. And let's be honest, Liverpool's weak link this season was centre-half.

“So, I do believe a club like Liverpool would look at Van De Ven because he's very pacey and very strong.

“He's a good centre-half, isn't he? And I know he gets a few injuries with his hamstrings, but there would be a lot of interest from clubs if he becomes available. Let's hope for Tottenham's sake he's happy at the club.”

The Dutch defender has a contract with Tottenham until 2029, meaning Spurs are not desperate to sell in the coming months which may mean the 25 year old stays in North London.
