Manchester City defender Nico O'Reilly has received his first call up to the England squad after James dropped out this week ahead of the Three Lions’ games against Wales and Latvia.
However, despite pulling out, Fabrizio Romano reports that the Chelsea captain’s injury is not as serious as first thought and he could return after the international break.
“Reece James’ injury seen as not serious, he won’t be out for long time as Chelsea are also optimistic.
“Sources confirm the decision to withdraw from England squad was precautionary.”
Journalist Ben Jacobs also confirmed the news which will be a relief to Blues fans whose defence has already been rife with injuries this season.
“Reece James has a minor issue that would have stopped him featuring in either of England’s matches.
“Told England’s medical staff made the final call to replace James.
“All parties view James’ absence as precautionary and short-term.”
Chelsea face Nottingham Forest after the break and James should return for Maresca if he rests over the next week whilst he watches England from home.
