Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has spoken to the media ahead of this weekend's clash with Arsenal.

United are fifth in the Premier League table, one point behind fourth-placed Liverpool who they could leapfrog if the Reds fail to pick up 3 points against Bournemouth this weekend.

The Red Devils’ last away victory over Arsenal in the league came in December 2017 and United enter the game after a weeks rest following their win over Manchester City last weekend.

The Man City win does not make Man Utd great again

Carrick first spoke on his future and admitted that every decision he is making is in the short term as he tries to get the best out of his side.

"For the week or so it’s been so far it hasn’t happened just yet, the initial thoughts are what’s happening now.

“The important thing for me is any decision I make or the staff make is it’s not short-term, I’ve got a responsibility to whatever happens next I’ve got to make the right decision. As time goes on we’ll work our way through it."

The victory over City was a huge boost for United as fans began to debate as to whether Carrick could be a good long term replacement. However, the former midfielder has revealed that the game means nothing if his side cannot be consistent.

"I will not tell you the team. No, everyone came through the game really well actually. It has been a good week. A big result, a big performance and a big uplift with the feeling inside the stadium.

"It is finding a balance between getting the encouragement and confidence from the game and performance and keeping level-headed and keeping our feet on the ground. We have got another big game coming up.

"One game does not make you a great team. It gives us a great foundation to build on. There's a lot of confidence, a lot of good feeling in the group but measured with that is we know what is coming and we have got to be ready for it."

Casemiro's future was decided before Carrick arrived

Arsenal have the best home record in the Premier League this season, winning nine and drawing two of their 11 matches at the Emirates. United will have to be at their very best to grab a result and Carrick spoke more on his opponents and the loss of Casemiro who announced he will depart at the end of the campaign.

"They are a very good team. It is a big challenge. They are in the Champions League for a reason. Not taking them lightly. We want to be positive.

"There will be conversations and discussions in good time and at the right time. The announcement for Case was for clarity. It was decided before I arrived, it is not just a knee-jerk decision.

"The type of personality and character he has shown with his performance last week, where he is mentally and how much it means for him to be here and to finish the season strong. I have already had that conversation with him, he is desperate to do well and finish well. So I have got no doubts about him at all."
