England were held to a humbling 0-0 draw by Group L rivals Ghana at Boston Stadium on Tuesday night as they hit a creative block despite having world-class talents at their disposal.
The Three Lions looks clueless in midfield and toothless in attack on the night and many have questioned why manager Thomas Tuchel would leave out the likes of Phil Foden, Adam Wharton and Palmer who could have stepped up for the side.
Carragher believes that Palmer missing out is a huge blow as England’s bench simply doesn’t have enough quality.
"That's England's problem here. The longer this goes on, the more we must look to the bench and ask who can come on and make a difference?
"Rice and Bellingham are all about power and energy; they aren't magicians in the spaces between the lines. If this continues, the debate will start regarding Cole Palmer's absence. We've seen so many games like this in major tournaments.
"Those who championed Palmer's inclusion foresaw tactical conundrums like this – which is why some of us thought it better to have him as an option."
While England boasted 78.8% possession, Tuchel’s side lacked a creative spark which Palmer could have offered this summer despite his poor form for Chelsea.
