United have struggled for consistent results since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013. Many, like Paul Scholes have argued that aspects of the team’s play and standards don’t meet what United supporters expect historically.
Meanwhile, many others such as Eric Cantona have complained that the club’s problems stem from those behind the scenes rather than the players themselves.
Earlier this season, Rio Ferdinand said United currently have “no real idea or real patterns” in how they play, calling the situation a “sad state of affairs.”
Now, in an interview with FourFourTwo, Butt has argued that even the world’s best coaches could not take the club back to their title winning ways.
"For me, it’s fundamentally that the club is rotten from the bottom up at the minute. If you brought prime Sir Alex Ferguson back in, he wouldn’t be able to turn it around straight away, it would still take time. If you put Pep Guardiola in there, or Jurgen Klopp, it wouldn’t work either."
"Ultimately, I think the players we’re buying and the players that we’re able to buy aren’t at the level we used to have, so it’s about accepting the fact that it’s going to take five to eight years in order to get the club back to anywhere near winning the Premier League. It’s been a sh*tshow."
Manager Ruben Amorim has led his side to 6th in the table and out of the EFL Cup this season. The club are far away from winning the title this season and many expect it will take years to see a resurgence.
