Manchester United legend Steve Bruce has pleaded with the club to hand Harry Maguire a new deal.

Maguire has made 261 appearances and scored 17 goals for Manchester United since his £80M move from Leicester in August 2019.

The England star’s long-term future has been a constant subject of debate over the last few years, as many are divided as to whether the defender should be handed a new deal.

The 32-year-old was often deemed one of the worst players to ever feature for the side, but over the past two years has slowly turned into one of the club’s most trusted defenders.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Bruce has revealed that he believes Maguire should be handed a new deal ahead of the World Cup this summer.

“I believe Harry has been made the whipping boy for too long. I don't think he's ever let Man United down. In that fact, he's never let England down, either.

“As I said, I think he became a whipping boy for what was going on around him. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets offered a new deal. Why wouldn't you? I think centre-halves get better with age.

“I wouldn't be surprised if he went to the World Cup either. He's got good experience, he's played at the highest level, he's never let England down either. And he's given a reminder of just what he's about over the last five, six weeks in particular, if he ever needed to.”

With Maguire said to be earning £180,000-a-week, reports state that he may need to take a small pay cut despite having vast experience and leadership qualities.

He will feature at the World Cup in a few months time under manager Thomas Tuchel which many fans suggest is a sign that United should move quick and lock him down to a new deal.
