Villa host Newcastle in today's early kickoff.
McGinn told Villa's websit: “It’s always a big game. There’s always good games between us. We’ve obviously been a direct rival for a few seasons for European spots.
“What they achieved last year – winning a trophy and getting into the Champions League – is something that we’re striving for.
“Hopefully, this year, our form at Villa Park can carry on, and we can start with three points.
“It’s a big game and one we’re looking forward to.”
Good full preseason
The Scotsman feels Villa are well prepared for today.
He added: “Summer was good – (we) got a longer break this year, so it was really important to get the legs rested.
“Last year, for a lot of players, we were certainly feeling it at different stages. It was a much longer break this year and a lot of the players are feeling better. We’re feeling ready to go.
“I think we get the balance right, here. The aim of pre-season is to get used to certain tactics, get used to each other in a different environment, and stay fit.
“We’ve managed to avoid any serious injuries, which is the main thing, making sure everyone’s healthy so the manager has a big enough squad to pick from on day one.
“It’s been a good pre-season and we’re certainly in good shape.”
