The 62-year-old took charge of the club where it all began 25 years ago following the dismissal of Bruno Lage.
Mourinho started his managerial career at Benfica but left after just 10 games following a falling out with the club’s president.
He reignited the dream on Saturday (September 20), leading Benfica to a 3-0 victory over AVS.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho couldn’t hide his delight and surprise at being appointed the new Benfica manager, while also reaffirming his ambition to one day take on an international coaching role.
Mourinho told Sky Sports News: "I’m honest, I always thought I would be back to Portugal. But I always thought I would come back to the national team.
“I knew that the national team would come sooner or later. It come before, I didn’t, I couldn’t accept. I was thinking one day it will happen. I think it is a natural consequence of my career. (But) it happened to be Benfica. A giant club."
