Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santiago Canizares believes president Florentino Perez has been struggling in recent years.

Canizares was reflecting on Florentino's recent decision-making after it was announced this week that Real Madrid had brought the breakaway Super League attempt to an end.

He told Radio Marca: “Football has shown that it has a much longer lifespan than any leader, any club, any player or coach.

“I believe that Florentino Pérez, in the recent decisions he has made in recent years… do not reflect the best version of himself.

“Florentino Pérez has built a reputation based on excellent management, and we've had to tip our hats to him 20 times over.

“Players, coaches, and even presidents have their moments where, under certain conditions, they unleash their great talent. But time passes, time passes for everyone."

For Cañizares, Florentino's decision-making has fallent short in recent years.

He continued, "I think Florentino Pérez's evolution as a manager hasn't been as good as his previous management style or his beginnings, when he brought great ideas to football.

"Florentino's form in recent years, clashing with everyone, failing to build a stadium at the price he initially planned, failing to get the concerts off the ground, or the parking lot, and having a somewhat unbalanced team that has now lost its dominance in Europe... well, obviously, it doesn't speak well of his management style."

Even so, he concluded with a constructive message after the Super League call: “The best thing that could happen to Real Madrid fans is for Florentino to react positively. I think this is a good step, trying to adopt a slightly more moderate approach and seeking what’s best for Real Madrid without having to face impossible challenges and without support.”

He finished by saying: “For me, it’s a good step, a gesture of humility from Florentino that I welcome."
