Sport says doctors have recommended surgery for the 33-year-old goalkeeper, without which no recovery would be guaranteed.
This operation would mean an absence of approximately four months for Ter Stegen. The news could shake up the German's future at FC Barcelona.
Pushed towards the exit by Blaugrana management, it will now be more difficult to find him a new club. He is under contract until June 2028.
