Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has picked up a muscular injury this week as he prepared for the sidelines.

The former Liverpool defender was forced off during Wednesday's 3-0 victory at Athletic Club in what has been deemed his best performance for Los Blancos since he joined the club before the start of the Club World Cup in the summer.

Trent has recently been called a “rabbit in the headlights” due to his poor defending as the Spanish press rip into his performances. Now, his situation only grows worse as the club revealed the extent of his injury.

"Following tests carried out today by the Real Madrid Medical Services on our player, Trent Alexander-Arnold, he has been diagnosed with a muscular injury to the rectus anterior quadriceps in his left leg. His progress will be monitored.”

Replays showed the Englishman's joint bend at a worrying angle before he carried on with the game. However, he soon asked to be taken off and the medical team agreed that he should be brought off for treatment. Reports now suggest he could be out for up to 2 months, with a comeback date set for early February.

Madrid boss Xabi Alonso is already coping with the absence of injured captain Dani Carvajal, leaving midfielder Federico Valverde to potentially fill in at right-back again as the Spanish side struggle with replacements at the back.

So far, Alonso is standing by Alexander-Arnold and before the Girona draw said: “It's his first year, and this adjustment period is normal. He's also demanding of himself, and we have to support him through this significant change.”
