As reported by The Telegraph, radical changes will be put towards the International Football Association Board (Ifab) meeting which includes VAR checks for second yellow cards and corners and the the banning of penalty rebounds which has sparked debate online.
The new rules could be brought in for the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico as football continues to evolve. Senior officials have argued that penalty rebounds gives the attacking side a far greater chance of scoring a goal than the original infringement had prevented.
One great example is Xabi Alonso’s effort in the 2005 Champions League final as he scored the rebound in what was an iconic comeback. Meanwhile expanding the scope of VAR interventions, could mean that video officials now be able to intervene in a number of new circumstances including the prevention of unfair dismissals through second yellow cards and corner decisions which may lead to a goal.
Any significant rule changes would have to be agreed before the end of February next year in order to be approved for the World Cup and it will be very interesting to see the outcome of upcoming meetings in what are decisions that would greatly affect the sport.
