Villa won 2-0 thanks to goals from Emi Buendia and John McGinn.
Emery said afterwards: “We are happy, and we compete fantastic.
“We are so grateful, how our supporters travelled to be with us here, transmitting their energy, they push, and of course, so proud of the work we did.
“And then, how we compete, how we suffered, struggled the first half, and we were under our expectation to try to dominate more with the ball, but they were pushing, they were creating chances.
“But the second half, we (were) continuing, carrying on, being resilient, our game plan, and we got better than the first half of the domination with the positioning, with the ball, and we were getting (in) their box more.
“Even we hit the post, a very good opportunity with Evann, and then we scored the first goal, and we continued dominating, and we scored the second goal.”
He continued: “I think the second half was really fantastic, but it was very important, how we showed our mental capacity, the first half, to be resilient, to keep going in our game plan, and don't be panicked when we were conceding some chances or some corners offensively for them.
“And I am so, so happy, because Europe is like that, it's difficult. You have to be very, very competitive, you have to keep strongly your game plan and try to adapt, competing against, the opponent, and playing away more, and we did it.
“We did everything we were planning, everything. I was in my expectation, the difficulties we were facing, we did it, overcoming the bad moments we had in 90 minutes, and in the end, we, I think, we deserved to win, because we were progressively getting better during the match.”
