Cristian Romero has signed a long-term contract with Tottenham this week amid transfer links to other top European clubs.

Romero had two years remaining on his previous contract, which ran until June 2027, but has now committed to Spurs until 2029. This comes after many fans were convinced he would be sold to Atlético Madrid this summer in the wake of Ange Postecoglou’s sacking after the Europa League final last season.

The 27-year-old has made a total of 126 appearances for the North London side to date, scoring eight times. Supporters are elated on social media as the Argentina international is regarded as one of their best players and him leaving the side would have been devastating.

The club confirmed the deal on their website, just hours after the news that they had also tied down Djed Spence to a new long term deal.

“We are delighted to announce that Cristian Romero has signed a new, long-term contract with the Club.

“Having initially joined the Club on a season-long loan from Serie A side Atalanta in August, 2021, the Argentina international signed permanently the following year.

“Captain for the final four matches of our run to European glory last term, ‘Cuti’ played a vital role in our UEFA Europa League success and claimed the competition’s Player of the Season award.

“He was named Player of the Match in the Final, while he also earned a place in the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League Team of the Season alongside team-mates Guglielmo Vicario, Pedro Porro, and Dominic Solanke.”

The Tottenham captain is a rock at the heart of Spurs’ defence and recently manager Thomas Frank described Romero as “very, very committed” to the club. He is one of the Premier League’s most decorated and accomplished centre-backs and with him, Micky van de Ven and Spence all tied down it looks like Tottenham’s defense is secured for the future.
