Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has spoken to the press ahead of the clash with AZ Alkmaar in the Conference League.

Still searching for the first European home win in their history, Palace welcome AZ Alkmaar to South London for the very first time. The Eagles have won 10 and drawn six of their 19 home matches and should be confident heading into the tie that is sure to be full of action.

What threat do Alkmaar pose?

Glasner first spoke on the threat of Alkmaar and whether this is a must-win fixture considering their position in 16th.

"There is never a must win. Yes, we want to win, we will do everything to win the game, but Alkmaar is a very experienced team in European football. Maybe not for their age (of the club) but they always qualify for European football.

"Two years ago they played Aston Villa in the group stage. Three years ago they played in the semi-finals of the Conference League and lost against West Ham - two very tight games, losing 1-0 and 2-1. In both games (against West Ham) they had more possession and showed good finishing.

"It's a very good team, one of the top four teams in the Netherlands - Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord and Alkmaar."

Is Wharton back?

Questions then turned to Adam Wharton and if he will be available for the tie as he slowly returns to full fitness.

“Adam is back. To be honest, I think he’s not 100% right now – his fever was too high – but it’s good now to be back in the rhythm, in the training sessions, and then let’s see how many minutes he gets tomorrow.”

Glasner is trying to fix Palace's packed schedule

Glasner revealed his frustration over the football calendar earlier this month, and was next asked about having to play three matches in six days in December.

"We are trying the same thing that Arsenal are trying, to move our Leeds game forward to Saturday, so we don't have two days between these games. Let's see.

"We didn't get a response until now from the Premier League, just to have the same as Arsenal, if their game is moved.

"I am always talking about making mistakes being part of development. I think that the EFL and the Premier League didn't solve this problem before the start of the season - they will learn from it and I am pretty sure that next year they will have the solution before the start of the season.

"Maybe they needed this experience to solve it, not to rely that it won't happen.

"Again, we will be ready, whatever the fixture is, but it is so far away, we have so many games until 23 December that at the moment I don't care."

"I rely on the club, that they get the Leeds game moved to the Saturday, and then let's see."

Glasner has been impressed by Alkmaar

Finally, he touched once more on Alkmaar, who he admits he has been studying closely over recent days as he prepares for a fight for which could take them up to the top half of the table.

"I watched their last game against Sparta Rotterdam. Yes, they won 1-0, but they could have been three or four-nil up by half-time.

"It just showed how good they are. We will have to perform at our top level to get this win. It would make it a little easier to have this win for the following three games, but it is really a case of taking it step by step, game by game and make sure we put in our best performance tomorrow."
