The 28-year-old helped The Eagles lift the FA Cup last season as Palace beat Manchester City in the final. The striker, who has hit 36 goals in the last two seasons, has been pivotal to the club’s success but has now suggested he could leave in the coming years.
When asked whether he would like to “move up a gear” to join an elite club who could potentially provide him Champions League football, he told RMC Sport:
“That is natural. Every ambitious player wants to make that step, especially when you arrive in the national team and around you there are only players who are playing in the Champions League, who win the biggest trophies.
“When you are surrounded by the best players in the world, naturally, you want to make that step.”
Liverpool were linked with Mateta in the summer transfer window alongside the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United, who can provide him a better chance at European football.
Mateta has already scored four times this season for a Palace side looking to add to their trophy cabinet. He spoke more on the club’s ambitions as he admits that the club will not settle for mediocrity.
“I think that we have a good squad and an excellent manager who is doing a really good job. We try to implement everything that the manager wants,' Mateta added.
“We don’t just want to play like we did in recent years. I think that we have already progressed in these last two seasons, and so I think that this year, we will be even more ambitious.”
