Chelsea have won each of their last three Premier League games without conceding a goal as they climbed to second in the league this weekend.
However, the Blues have struggled in Europe and drew with Qarabag last time out in what was a disappointing display for Maresca’s side. The Italian head coach is preparing to face La Liga leaders Barcelona this week as he comes up against one of the best teams in the competition.
Cucurella has described the upcoming Champions League match against Barcelona as a “very special game” for him and his family:
“We have the opportunity to play Champions League, a special night. It’s always a good game between the clubs”.
“Hopefully tomorrow we can do a good game and get the three points.”
Maresca was asked how his side plan to stop Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, who has been unstoppable over the past year. He revealed that Cucurella will be key to locking down the teenager.
“Cucu is a big advantage for us always, not just tomorrow. His level has been amazing since I’ve been at the club, not just defending, but as part of our game, he is a big value and we are very pleased with him.
“They have quite a few players we need to face as a team.”
Yamal assisted twice as Barcelona returned to the Camp Nou at the weekend in a 4-0 thumping of Athletic Club. Maresca will be hoping that Cucurella can stop Yamal or Chelsea may taste defeat for the first time since October.
