Liverpool, last year’s Premier League champions, have lost nine of their last 12 matches, their most defeats over a 12-game period since November 1953 to January 1954.
Seven months ago today, Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield to secure the title. Fast-forward until now, and they sit 12th in the league and slumped to a 4-1 drubbing to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
Slot will fight on
Slot was guaranteed to be questioned about his future, amid reports that the Dutchman is set to be sacked at any moment as the media line-up their ideal replacements. He first spoke on whether he will stay and says he will fight on.
“We've had the same convos as we've had since I've been here. We fight on. And we try to improve, that is what we all try. The convos have been the same as the last 18 months.
"Let down by the players? No, not at all. Although I do agree that our standards, the team, have not been at the standard we're used to. We think we can play better than we do. The focus is on the team, not the individuals. If the opposite is happening, we look at the team, not the individuals.
"It's not easy to say what I can do different. If you win, lose or draw you reflect on decisions you do in the week, maybe you do it more if you lose. We try to find the answer we need to win a game. In the end it's about doing what this club is about - keep fighting, we have to fight together.
"It would also be nice if we reward ourselves in the moments we play well, because there are large parts when we do. Every small mistake or error leads to us conceding a goal. "
Despite spending around £450M on new signings in the summer, Liverpool look worse than ever. His side had 2.5xG against PSV, scoring just once and 1.93xG against Forest and failed to score at all. Slot says he is angered by his side not taking their chances.
"I take frustration from it. xG doesn't always tell you the right story. So when do you get those chances? You are always more open when you concede, against Villa and Real Madrid we hardly conceded chances but when we are chasing games we concede chances.
"We don't reward ourselves for good phases of the games, and that is best shown in xG created, which is ridiculous. xG, I didn't need it to know we missed a lot of chances."
Restoring confidence
Many fans have called for the Dutchman to be sacked this week following the loss to PSV, which many believe should have spelled the end for the 47 year old whose job is hanging by a thread. Liverpool are a team without confidence, and Slot was asked if his team need a jumpstart.
"I don't see it being low when we start games and not even after the 1-0 y'day but after the fourth or fifth knock, I saw a difficult 5-10 mins. Even at 2-1, disappointment but we were able to generate enough chances for 2-2. But at 3-1 I could see it hurt the players and that wasn't where the fighting spirit was at the best.
"My message getting across? At 3-1 it's difficult to get it across but before and at half-time, I see how we create and a lot of it is in the meetings but it doesn't lead to goals. It is difficult for us all but the message comes across very clearly how we generate our chances. That is obvious.
"I think you consider everything but until now I have decided differently but other players have shown in some moments in training. Some people think I should change more but I made changes and we lost a game (Palace in Carabao). Of course I consider a lot."
Team news
Liverpool will now prepare for three successive Premier League fixtures against West Ham, Sunderland and Leeds United and Slot provided some key team news ahead of the weekend
"Alisson trained again today with the team, we hope and expect he is available at the weekend.
"(Florian) Wirtz will have his final day of rehab tomorrow, if all goes well he can train with he team on Saturday.
"(Hugo) Ekitike, today was a recovery day but they don't expect it has to be a big issue."
