Atletico Madrid midfielder Johnny Cardoso has made history by becoming just the fourth American player to feature for a Spanish club in the UEFA Champions League.

The 24-year-old achieved this having been handed a starter’s role by Diego Simeone in Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over Serie A side Inter Milan at the Estadio Metropolitano.

With that he joined the hallowed ranks that includes Oguchi Onyewu (Malaga) and Sergino Dest and Konrad de la Fuente with Barcelona.

Cardoso was in action from start to finish and marked this milestone with a victory as Jose María Gimenez scored a 93rd-minute winner as Atlético Madrid ended Inter’s 100% winning record in this season’s competition.
