United’s victory ensured they did the league double over Liverpool for the first time since 2015-16 in what was a momentous occasion where Mainoo was hailed as a hero.

Mainoo, who had been largely overlooked under Amorim, has become pivotal to Michael Carrick’s succes since he took charge.

The midfielder tried to force his way out of the club in the summer and winter window as he was desperate to leave to Napoli in what was the toughest test of his career so far.

Speaking after the win over the Reds, Dalot commented on Mainoo’s feud with Amorim which he says made the 21-year-old stronger.

"I think it shows the level that he can become. I think it's becoming a very complete player. Even in the last couple of games, you could see him stepping up his game.

“And I mean, really pleased that, not because he scored the goal.

"He has quality for that, but overall, he's a fantastic kid that worked really hard to be in this position. So really, really happy with him."

Mainoo, who did not start a single league game this season under Amorim, is a revelation under Carrick and is one of the factors that could help him land the permanent role.
