Trent Alexander-Arnold's mural has been damaged ahead of his return to Anfield in the Champions League this evening as Real Madrid face Liverpool.

The England star left the Premier League champions for La Liga after his contract expired in what was one of the most controversial transfers of the summer, as the academy star waved goodbye to the club whose fan base now despise him.

Real Madrid take on Liverpool at Anfield as the first phase of the UEFA Champions League continues, which means Trent will finally make his way back to Anfield in what is not a welcome return.

A mural on the corner of Sybil Road near Anfield features Alexander-Arnold in a Liverpool shirt that has now been defaced. It said: "I'm just a normal lad from Liverpool, whose dream has just come true."

Now, the artwork has had graffiti painted over it saying “"Adios the rat." This comes as fans make their feelings known to a player who they believe betrayed the club as he made his way to Spain.

Alexander-Arnold was asked what welcome he expected from Liverpool supporters as he spoke to Amazon Prime:

“Whatever way I’m received, is the decision of the fans. I’ll always love the club, I’ll always be a fan of the club. I’ll always be thankful for the opportunities and the things we achieved together… they’ll live with me forever.

“No matter what, my feeling won’t change towards Liverpool. I’ve got memories there that will last me a lifetime and, no matter how I’m received, that won’t change.”

He will certainly not get a warm welcome from fans during the clash, where Madrid boss Xabi Alonso may seek to protect the defender who will be focused on by the relentless home crowd.
