Fifa has accused Malaysia of falsifying citizenship documents for seven players in what is a huge scandal.

In September, FIFA suspended seven overseas-born players who all featured for Malaysia in June’s 4-0 win over Vietnam in a 2027 Asian Cup qualifier. The suspension was for 12 months and the football governing body ordered FAM to pay 350,000 Swiss francs or £330,000.

The ruling saw Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garcés, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, João Figueiredo, Hector Hevel and Jon Irazábal all banned as the scandal continues this week.

Malaysia's sports minister Hannah Yeoh understands frustration over the situation, which has damaged the country’s reputation.

"I also understand that all local football fans are naturally angry, disappointed and want to see improvements.”

Jorge Palacio, deputy chairman of the Fifa Disciplinary Committee also spoke on the scandal which will greatly affect Malaysia’s aim to qualify for the Asian Cup tournament.

“The committee wished to highlight that it concurred with the conclusion of the investigatory reports, specifically, that the original birth certificates indicated a sharp contrast to the documentation provided.”

Malaysia is set to play against Laos in another Asian Cup qualifier this week and without the sanctioned players the nation may struggle as they try to recover from such an incident.
