Mikel Arteta wants to strengthen a position that was chopped and changed throughout the last term due to injuries.
Piero Hincapie, Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly were all deployed in the role at various points throughout the campaign, with Hincapie starting in the Champions League final against PSG.
Meanwhile, Arteta's decision to use Lewis-Skelly as a central midfielder towards the end of the season arguably suggests that his future could be in the middle rather than at left back.
That is why Arsenal are in the market for an attacking full-back to compete with Calafiori and Hincapie, identifying Eintracht Frankfurt superstar Nathaniel Brown as a key target.
Brown also received interest from Bayern Munich and was sold by Vincent Kompany's project after extensive discussions with his representatives.
But despite giving them the green light to sign him, there was a gulf in valuation between the two clubs. According to The Athletic, Frankfurt want €65 million (£56m) for the 22-year-old, who can play in midfield or on the right side of defence.
Bayern remain the favourites to sign the talented youngster ahead of his first World Cup with Germany. However, a deal for the "very fast" full-back is far from complete, and Arsenal could move ahead in the race by triggering that asking price.
