Spurs boss Postecoglou: Son shows he's ideal captain for new era

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou lavished praise on Heung-min son yesterday.

The Australian admitted that Son, who now has 160 goals for the club, has shown why he was made club captain.

Postecoglou acknowledged it was a big call to have him take over from Hugo Lloris as skipper, but feels that Son has justified the promotion.

He stated post-game: “It wasn't a big decision to make him the captain. Obviously it was a big decision who the next leader was going to be. With Hugo being such a huge influence in recent years, obviously Harry as well and people like Eric Dier and others who had been at the club for a long time.

“It was obviously going to be a key decision in terms of the direction we wanted to go and part of what I have said all along is I felt we needed to make a change in most things we were doing to show we were heading in a new direction.

“It could have been very easy for me to think Sonny is not the change we need because he's been so influential, but I felt he was such a natural fit.

“He has obviously been a leader in his national team and I had no hesitation in putting him in that position, but fair to say he's been outstanding.

“Sometimes when you get the official title it can weigh heavily and you feel a bigger burden when you're out there, but his performances this year have been outstanding. If anything it's taken him to a new level."
