Argentina will stage a defence of their global crown next summer with Messi leading the side in what will be a very tough test for the 38-year-old who is coming to the end of his illustrious career.

Saviola spoke to El Grafico about the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who he believes should be appreciated as he comes to the final few games for an Argentina side who have been very successful.

“I don't think Leo knows it either, because I always think about it, trying to be in his head... after winning the World Cup, after making us all happy, not just Argentinians, but the entire football world, who wanted Leo to have a World Cup.

“I think he'll be there. I see him eager, involved, enjoying himself. But I also feel like we're nearing the end of a wonderful story. I hope it brings closure to everything he gave us.”

Messi spoke on his chances at being at the World Cup which he says comes down to his physical state which, after playing a whole season with Inter Miami is a shaky subject as he prepares to turn 39 years old in June.

"Given my age, the most logical thing is that it won't happen. I'm excited, eager, but I'm taking it day by day, match by match. ... I'll continue as I have been, taking it day by day, trying to feel good, and above all, being honest with myself.

“When I feel good, I enjoy it. And if I'm not good, I have a bad time and I'd rather not be there. I'll see. ... I haven't made a decision about the World Cup."
