A new rule was introduced this summer which means referees will initiate a visible five-second countdown with their hands if they believe a player is intentionally stalling a restart.
This means that if the countdown expires on a throw-in, possession is returned to the opponent as FIFA try to speed up the game and make it more enjoyable for supporters.
Former Arsenal star Sead Kolašinac was one of the first victims of this new rule as he gave up possession to Canada when he took too long to launch his throw in. The Canadian players spotted the rule-break and referee Facundo Tello rightly overturned possession.
Now, as Scotland faced Haiti in their opening game, Robertson seems to have found an exploit which has divided fan opinion online.
The 32-year-old, who recently signed for Spurs, placed the ball down, therefore stalling the countdown before pointing towards his teammates as he directed them without a timer.
However, as fans discovered his genius tactic, many pointed out that the International Football Association Board state that “the referee does not have to wait for a player to have possession of the ball to start the five-second countdown.”
Despite this, Robertson did seem to get more time to take the throw in during the clash, potentially giving ideas to many other players looking to exploit the rule this summer.
