Old rivals England and Argentina will meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals as part of an epic incoming tie on July 15.

The defending champions have endured a controversial path to the final four, after winning all their group games, but struggling for consistency in the knockouts with all three clashes gong to extra time.

Lionel Scaloni's team have seen their endurance tested in wins over Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland to set up a high-stakes showdown with England in Atlanta.

The rivalry between the two nations is clear with five previous World Cup meetings including famous wins for La Albiceleste in 1986 and 2002 before an England victory in 2002.

However, despite the history and familiarity of a clash between the two countries, it will be a first for Argentina captain Lionel Messi, with the most recent clash coming in November 2005.

An 18-year-old Messi made his senior Argentina debut a few months before against Hungary, but he was not called up for the November friendly in neutral Switzerland, which England won 3-2 thanks to two late goals from Michael Owen.

England have not beaten Argentina in competitive action since their World Cup triumph in 1966, with the head-to-head World Cup record also in the Three Lions favour, with three wins compared to two for the South American giants.

Whoever comes out on top in their semi-final battle will know who they will face in the final with Spain taking on France the day before in Arlington.
