Argentina and England will meet on the FIFA World Cup stage for the first time since 2002 as the two rivals booked their places in the 2026 semi-finals.

The defending champions had to dig deep to pull through a 3-2 extra time win over ten-man Switzerland as England also needed 30 more minutes to see off Norway.

Those clashes were draining for both sets of players and Thomas Tuchel and Lionel Scaloni will only have a limited window to prepare their squads for a showdown in Atlanta on July 15.

Experience will be crucial as Argentina bid for back-to-back finals and England try to make it to that stage for the first time since 1966.

Argentina defensive stalwart Cristian Romero played all 120 minutes as Scaloni's charges beat France in the 2022 final in Qatar and the Tottenham centre-back has started all three knockout games in 2026.

The 28-year-old will be key once again up against England and he had a clear message for his teammates over what will be needed to win in Atlanta.

"We will give our souls against England. It's football, sometimes you win or lose, but we will leave our lives on the pitch to reach the final again.

"We don’t fully realise what we’re achieving or what we’re doing. I’m incredibly proud to be part of this family, this national team.

"Sometimes we don’t play our best football, but we leave everything out on the pitch and never give up until the final minute. Whether we play well or badly, we give our hearts every single game, and that showed against Switzerland."
