England will face off with Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup last 16 after a dramatic 2-1 win over DR Congo in the first knockout stage.

Thomas Tuchel's team continue to grit their way through the competition as two late goals from Harry Kane saved the Three Loins from a shock exit in Atlanta.

The prospect of facing Mexico on their home turf at the Estadio Azteca is a daunting one for England and Tuchel is unclear over several selection calls ahead of the game.

Right-back remains a real source of concern, with Reece James missing the last two games, and the Chelsea captain is not expected to be back in time for the Mexico clash.

Jarell Quansah is also out of action and Djed Spence endured a mixed night in the role against DR Congo as Brian Cipenga got away from him to score their opening goal.

Spence was replaced on 70 minutes at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, as England trailed 1-0, with Declan Rice thrown in at right-back for the closing stages and the Arsenal midfielder is not keen on starting there against Mexico.

"That 12 minutes at right-back was probably the hardest stint of the game for me. I've played there two or three times this season for Arsenal and I know the position.

"I's not my biggest strength, but I'd do anything for this team and the manager. When he asked, I just went in and did my best.

"Let's see what happens in the next game, but hopefully I'm not at right-back."

Whoever starts at right-back will be up against Mexico star Julian Quinones who opened the scoring in their 2-0 win over Ecuador in the previous round.
