Bruno Alves has stepped forward in strong defence of Cristiano Ronaldo as the Portugal captain faces mounting criticism at the 2026 World Cup.

The former international defender backed his ex-teammate after a frustrating start to the tournament, following Portugal’s 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their Group K opener in Houston.

Ronaldo, 41, making a record sixth World Cup appearance, was heavily scrutinised after failing to convert several key chances, sparking debate among fans and pundits.

However, Alves, who lifted Euro 2016 alongside the forward, rejected the negativity and posted a defiant message on social media in support of the veteran star.

"Respect, idols are timeless!" Alves wrote on Instagram.

"A lot of people talking about football without having done anything in football. Criticism only from those who do more! Cristiano, we trust you no matter what.”
