FC Midtjylland on Thursday evening overtook AGF at the top of the Danish Superliga table when they took advantage of AGF's 1-1 draw against away against FC Nordsjaelland by claiming a hard-fought and very fortunate 2-1 win away against Sonderjyske.

Sonderjyske - FC Midtjylland

FC Midtjylland went into the match against Sonderjyske boosted by their win against AGF on Monday and knowing that a win in Haderslev would allow them to steal top spot in the Superliga ahead of their Aarhus rivals.

The visitors also dominated proceedings from the start and took the lead after 24 minutes when Sonderjyske's third-choice keeper Benicio Pena failed to hang on to a shot from Dario Osorio, and Edward Chilufya was in the right place at the right time to slot home the rebound from close range.

However, the home side remained dangerous throughout the first half, and they were rewarded for their tenacity five minutes before the end of the half when Matthew Hoppe on a counter attack cut back past two defenders to launch a superb drive which went in via the post past keeper Elias Olofsson.

Four minutes after the interval, FC Midtjylland then recaptured the lead when Daniel Gretarsson was unfortunate to direct the ball into his own goal as he was trying to defend a cross from Victor Bak. Sonderjyske had chances to get back into the match and came close when Olofsson saved an attempt on the line, but the visitors held on for the three points.

FC Nordsjaelland - AGF

AGF arrived in Farum trying to restore morale after their disappointing defeat against FC Midtjylland, where they conceded two goals in the last six minutes, and they were fortunate not to fall behind after 28 minutes when Magnus Knudsen just got a touch to prevent Lamine Sadio from pushing the ball into an empty net.

Instead, the visitors got exactly the boost they were looking for three minutes later when Sebastian Jorgensen drove into the box and squared the ball across goal for the onrushing Patrick Mortensen, who slid the ball home to give AGF a 1-0 lead.

It was the 36-year-old veteran's first goal in the Superliga since 30th November last year, and the goal was also a success for coach Jakob Poulsen as Mortensen and Sebastian Jorgensen were two out of three new starters compared to the match on Monday.

On the pitch, the match stayed very even till the end. The home side enjoyed most possession, but AGF defended smartly for a long time, and goalkeeper Jesper Hansen was rock-solid between the posts this time.

He was, however, helpless when Levy Nene equalized with seven minutes left. Frederik Tingager's misplaced pass was intercepted by Caleb Yirenkyi, who launched a long delivery past the reach of Tingager, and Nene had no problems slotting the ball past Hansen.
