Onana travelled to the north-eastern Turkish city of Trabzon on Thursday after playing for Cameroon in World Cup qualifiers against Cape Verde and Eswatini this past week.
And he was met at Trabzon airport by a huge number of fans on Thursday afternoon.
The 29 year-old leaves United two years after joining in 2023 from Inter Milan for a fee of £47m.
