Xhaka, currently at the World Cup with Switzerland, was subject to a £8M bid from the Blues this summer as they attempted to drag him away from the Black Cats.
However, the bid was rejected and despite reports claiming that Xhaka wanted a move away to join Xabi Alonso’s project in West London, he will not force his way out of the side.
Sunderland hinted at Xhaka’s decision to stay with a social media post referencing the “We’ve got Granit Xhaka” song sung by supporters, which Xhaka shared himself on his social media channels.
Now, the iconic midfielder has spoken this week about his future which is firmly with Sunderland ahead of the new campaign.
"Sunderland has been my home since day one. We are all very happy.
"I decided to stay where I am; family is the most important thing. I am ready to make history with them."
On his time at the World Cup: “I keep getting better as time goes on. I have a wealth of experience—with my teammates, my coaches, and the support of my loved ones. All of that makes me happy."
Xhaka proved to be pivotal last season as Sunderland finished 7th in the Premier League and became only the fifth promoted club to qualify for Europe through a league position in their first season back in the Premier League. He will seek similar success next season whilst Chelsea still look for European football.
