Liverpool’s star signing Florian Wirtz has revealed that his astonishing price tag does not affect him at all as he only cares about football.

The German international arrived at Anfield for an initial £100M, with a further £16M of achievable add-ons in what is not only a club record fee but also a British transfer record that can put pressure on any player no matter their ability.

The pressure is not getting to him

Wirtz was honest about the pressure that has been piled on top of him after making the move to Merseyside where all eyes will be on him heading into the new season. He admits the anticipation does not affect him and that he is fully focused on the season ahead as Liverpool aim to defend their title.

“No, I don’t think about this (his fee),” he added. “I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn’t matter.

“The big challenge is to take the title again and it is the most difficult thing, so I try just to create chances and also work against the ball because I can also run a lot and I will try to bring this to the team.

“Then, with the ball, I hope I can make the team better and bring my team-mates into better situations.”

Slot has provided Wirtz with more freedom

The 22 year old was of interest to Bayern Munich and Manchester City, but chose Liverpool after being convinced by manager Arne Slot who he says drew up a plan for him to work with freedom in his side that he values over anything else.

“I think I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch,” Wirtz said, “and the manager gives it to me. Of course, I have to respect the position and the players around me, but I try to give my best on the pitch and find the right places. I have the freedom for this.

“I came (to Liverpool) because I thought I could fit in this team (straight away) and I am enjoying playing with these players. Every time it is getting a little bit better so I am happy with how it is going.

“I’m really enjoying the first weeks.”

Liverpool face Bournemouth in the opening game of the season and Wirtz should be one of the first names on the team sheet for Slot who has rejuvenated his side who will want nothing more than to seize the title once again.
