Keegan, who played for both clubs, before going on to manage Newcastle, died at the age of 75 last month following a battle with cancer.
Suitably, Newcastle hosted Liverpool at St James’ Park for their first game of the new Premier League season, with members of Keegan’s family in the director’s box.
Several of Keegan's former players from this memorable first spell in charge of Newcastle, between 1992 and 1997, were also in attendance.
These included Alan Shearer, Rob Lee, Peter Beardsley, Tino Asprilla, Warren Barton, Shaka Hislop, Lee Clark, Darren Peacock, Steve Watson, Ruel Fox, Steve Howey and Liam O'Brien.
During the warm up, players from both sides wore Keegan 7 on the back of their shirts.
Then, just before kick-off, the two sets of fans joined in an incredible tribute to their legend, with a huge display snapping the entire stadium.
Keegan 7 was spelt out in the Leazes End, and there was a massive tifo of 'King Kev' in the East Stand.
In the famous Gallowgate End, there was a banner with a famous Keegan quote, reading: "I want people to dream about their football club.
"They should. We should all be dreamers at heart. Some people are the opposite and say, 'We can't do that'. But when you ask them why, they can't give a reason. Well, I say, 'Why not?'"
