England manager Thomas Tuchel has given a positive assessment on Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as he recovers from an injury.

The Three Lions defender missed Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Brighton as Palace boss Oliver Glasner claimed that the 25-year-old “can't even walk” in what was shocking news for Guehi who is a pivotal part of The Eagles’ setup.

However, speaking ahead of England’s clash with Serbia on Thursday night, Tuchel has revealed that Guehi is doing well behind the scenes and has progressed well in such a short amount of time.

“With Marc it is very painful but there is no structural damage so it is all about the pain. There is a possibility that overnight from one day to the next that we have a significant improvement.

“So we are working, realistically, towards the second game. If he is not in training, let’s say, on Friday or Saturday, then we will not make him travel. Then he gets rest and treatment and can stay in London.

“It is nice. He wants to stay with us and we wanted him to stay close. He is one of the leaders, he is an important member of the team, he is an important glue between many players and it is nice to see.

“He tries everything to be included in the second match and we wanted to have the opportunity, that is why we assess him every day.”

Guehi has been the subject of interest from Premier League champions Liverpool, who were close to signing him in the summer window. The Reds had their bid of £35M accepted before Crystal Palace suddenly decided not to sell at the eleventh hour.

His contract runs out at the end of this season, and reports have claimed that Liverpool may make a bid once the January window opens in an attempt to lure him away early. Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have all been linked with the defender and news of him recovering from injury will only spark more rumours.
