United's decision to pay £18.1m for 23-year-old goalkeeper Lammens has come under question just days after he signed for the club as reports revealed that two top Premier League sides decided not to pursue the shot stopper.
Current goalkeeper Altay Bayindir made a costly error in their Premier League opener against Arsenal whilst the former man between the sticks André Onana was also culpable in the embarrassing League Cup exit to Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup.
Lammens is widely viewed in Belgium as the long-term replacement for Thibaut Courtois with the national team and has shown a lot of talent with Antwerp where he was trusted in goal at such a young age.
However, as reported by the Daily Mail, a report in Belgium named Sunderland and Leeds United as two teams who “enquired - but quickly dropped out when they heard the hefty asking price” for Lammens this summer.
The club looked at other options, including Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez but decided to go with Lammens who reports suggest has a very high ceiling.
Newly promoted Leeds and Sunderland dropping out does not mean he does not have the quality, just that his price was too high and United were willing to cough up the fee for who could be one of the Premier League’s next top goalkeepers.
