Now, as revealed by This is Anfield, journalists from Albania, Cape Verde, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Georgia, Mexico, Panama, Romania, Switzerland, Uganda and Qatar deemed the Egyptian was not among the top 10 players in the world.
Interestingly, as per One Football, Egyptian reporter Ismael Mahmoud revealed that only four of the journalists involved in the voting put Salah in first place. They were journalists from Egypt, Bahrain, Jordan, and South Africa.
Dembele was named No. 1 by 73 members of the voting panel as he ran away with the award on the night. Journalists agreed almost unanimously that the Frenchman deserved to lift the award after a fantastic campaign with the Champions League winners.
Other curious nominations included Scotland’s representative naming Scott McTominay at No. 1 whilst Switzerland picked Viktor Gyokeres was worthy of sitting in the No. 5 spot after a fantastic season with Sporting Lisbon.
