"Our project is game by game,” he said afterwards. “We know our objective in this league, so we will do everything step by step. Until the end of the season, we’ll make a count and see where we are — but for now, it’s just about fighting every week.

“Everyone knows the target is to be in the Premier League, so we keep going, we keep fighting, but like I say, game by game, giving everything, and we’ll see at the end of the season.

“We knew it would be a very hard game against a very big team. But we play together, we suffer together, so when we play like this together, the good things come. Because we’re working like a team - it’s not about individuals.”

Skipper Granit Xhaka struck for Sunderland - his first goal for the club.

Reinildo added, “Granit is a very big player and talking about him is special. He has such a good mind - he’s different, at such a high level.

“He has so much quality, not only on the pitch but off it. In training, he pushes us, he shares his experience - that’s very special. I’m very proud to play with him, it’s a dream.”
