The Magpies are in the market for Nick Pope's long-term replacement after rejecting the chance to sign Aaron Ramsdale on a permanent deal from Southampton.
Pope has featured for the last two games after previously losing his place to Ramsdale, but both have been guilty of high-profile mistakes.
Individual errors have dented Pope's confidence, in particular, and the 34-year-old's alarming drop off means signing a new goalkeeper is a priority.
According to The Telegraph, Man City's Trafford leads a three-man shortlist after having him stolen from them last summer by the Cityzens, and he is joined by Brighton's Verbruggen and Lens shot stopper Robin Risser.
The report claims that, out of the three, Newcastle's coaching staff feel Verbruggen's "passing range and accuracy in distribution" make him a perfect fit for the Toon.
That being said, Brighton could demand north of £50m for a goalkeeper who has kept nine clean sheets in 35 Premier League appearances this term.
But for someone who is only 23-years-old and has arguably another decade at the top of his game, it could be worth shelling out big money to land him this summer.
